This is a Letourneau tree stomper . Back in the day, Letourneau made some wild stuff. I think t his one in particular is especially weird. Just look at the way it moves! A nd watching it turn is almost comically awkward...

Riding on the legs of that thing seems like a great way to fall off and get stomped.

somehow my day feels complete now that I know there’s actually a machine called a “tree stomper.”

Letourneau made some seriously cool stuff. This on is on display as you come into M ackenzie, BC...a town built on the forest industry.

I like that one, too. Too bad it broke down a lot. Still a really cool machine.

But what was it for? I mean besides the obvious, stomping trees. Why did the trees need to be stomped?

I think it was to help clear land for development purposes.

That seems unnecessarily dangerous and inefficient. Couldn’t you just clear around the area and light it on fire in a controlled burn for much much cheaper? Clearly stomping trees ruins the wood.
Just why? And why is anyone allowed to ride in the leg of that thing when the cab is so carefully protected.

Bear in mind this thing was most likely built in the 1950s, which could help explain why those guys don’t seem terribly concerned about riding on the legs. I’m not exactly sure what the advantages of doing it this way are, but there must be something, because there it is, stomping trees. I think its purpose was to help clear land for development purposes, so m aybe the developers just didn’t want a bunch of burned-up land? If nothing else, this way is more entertaining ;)

I imagine everything would hurt after taking a ride in that, when you see how often and how hard the machine smacks the ground (which is the point, but still. . .).
I wonder if the constant shaking might knock things loose in the engine. Maybe that contributed to “unreliability” or the door randomly falling off, etc. You would never know what was fastened down tight enough!

I dunno, it moves slowly enough that it might not be that bad. Maybe the driver just has a really cushy seat ;)

I dont believe it was to use to wood, but shove down trees so that a road could be built over it, for areas in northern canada tundra .

I think like the wheeled version to stomp trees on tundra, which can be forzen or mus like. knocking the tress over helps form a more solid surface to then build a road.
